Coyotes Lacrosse's Black and Gold Series is an instructional box lacrosse league that will give players a new way to develop their lacrosse skills. Each of our seven 1.5-hour long sessions will consist of 45 minutes of instruction followed by 45 minutes of game play. Players will learn specific box lacrosse skills, concepts and strategies that will make them better field lacrosse players.

What is "box lacrosse"?

Box Lacrosse is an indoor version of lacrosse that is extremely popular in Canada and rapidly growing in the US. It is played 5v5 (plus goalies) on a hockey rink or indoor soccer field and all players, including defenders, must use short sticks. The nets are small (4'x4' instead of 6'x6') and the goalies wear large pads similar to hockey goalies. Shots clocks are set at 30 seconds every time the offense starts a possession.

Why are so many college coaches talking about box lacrosse?

In 2009 a Canadian player named Zach Greer set the all-time NCAA D1 Goals record. Since then Canadian players that grew up playing box lacrosse have consistently topped the NCAA scoring charts. College coaches began to recognize that these Canadian players possessed valuable skill sets that had been nurtured by the constraints of box lacrosse, and found ways to incorporate these players into the field lacrosse game so that they could flourish.

Which box lacrosse skills, concepts & strategies will make me a better field lacrosse player?

Box Lacrosse players are known as creative & efficient finishers - in order to score on a small net against a goalie in large pads, players learn to shoot with accuracy and deception rather than pure power. The"two-man game" and pick play is an integral part of box lacrosse that develops small-area passing, catching, and decision-making. Players learn that they can only succeed on offense using a balanced approach of dodges, off-ball cuts, picks and screens. The tight confines and 30-second shot clocks force players to be creative in their play. The rapid pace of game play plus the fact that the ball is never out of bounds means that players get far more reps and touches in box lacrosse than they do in field lacrosse. Defenders will handle the ball as much as offensive players in box training and will improve their stickwork, footwork and communication skills.
